It's been hard thinking of what to say about William. He's fairly quiet, except when he starts babbling about anime or Japanese sword fighting or the latest book he's reading (which I usually know nothing about). In other words, he's more like a peer these days and less like my child. Not that he'll ever not be my child, and not that he still doesn't need guidance and protection. He's just not the challenging milestone-making little kid he once was.
I am proud though. He's volunteering at the library once a week this summer, and he really enjoys it. He is a self-proclaimed bibliophile, and I couldn't be happier for him. He's also spent a good part of the summer hanging out with some friends who are participating in a King Arthur faire this fall. He's been joining in the fun, planning a costume and assisting with preparations.
He is taking an AP English class this year, and has a summer reading and writing assignments. He's procrastinated quite a bit, but I am confident he'll complete it. He wants to be a writer, so he has to write, right? Along those lines, I encouraged him to start a blog. It can be found here.
I hope that I can help him get into a sword-fighting class soon. That is something I never thought I'd hear myself saying! He's fascinated by it though, and I want to help him pursue his passions. We just need a bit more money, a bit more time, and a lot lower gas prices!
He's growing and changing and maturing; and I'm just trying to figure out my new job description. Right now, it's mainly interested observer. We share a love of books, debate and philosophy, but we don't share too many of the same specific interests. It's all good though.
